1984 by George Orwell is a a dystopian novel that tells the story of Winston Smith and warns of the dangers of a totalitarian government that rules through fear, surveillance, propaganda and brainwashing. The book is set in 1984 in Oceania, one of three perpetually warring totalitarian states and is governed by the all-controlling party, which has brainwashed the population into unthinking obedience to its leader, Big Brother. Winston and Julia are tortured and brainwashed by O’Brian in the Ministry of Love. In the process they lose their self respect, individuality and sexual desire.
